Durham Cathedral is within a couple of miles from home here, standing on the banks of the River Weir for almost 900 years. It is also the home to the shrine of St. Cuthbert. On the northern door to the Cathedral is the extremely dramatic Sanctuary Knocker. For those people who ‘had committed a great offence’, they could rap on the knocker and would be given an automatic 37 days of sanctuary within the confines of the Cathedral, in which time to try and resolve their problems.

Drawn in soft graded pencils on to ‘Daler Rowney’, 200 gram (120lb) Fine Grain Heavyweight Cartridge. The piece was a preparatory work for a commission from ‘Derwent Art Materials’, the finished oil pastel piece is shown within the ’Traditional Art’ section on my website.
